In “Three Days in the Journey from Yunnan to Vietnam”, the author Xueshan throws away the opium pipe of a Naxi man addicted to "aphros" (opium), ultimately leading him to quit smoking and attain a “civilized,” modern body. Within this gesture of renunciation one seems to glimpse the original gesture through which modernity arrived upon this land: the familiar world and the things one depended on are cast out; in that very same motion, the body is plunged into a new, modern world. Such new time and rhythm are repeatedly inscribed by technology, breathing in and out, iterating until they become the routine of the present day.
