In “Three Days in the Journey from Yunnan to Vietnam”, the author Xueshan throws away the opium pipe of a Naxi man addicted to "aphros" (opium), ultimately leading him to quit smoking and attain a “civilized,” modern body. Within this gesture of renunciation one seems to glimpse the earliest form through which modernity arrived upon this land.
